An International Webinar has been organized by UPBA UINSA as the highlight of the 20th UPBA Dies Natalis event. The International Webinar which took place on Saturday (11/06/2022) virtually via Zoom and Live Youtube carried the theme "Increasing Creativity and Innovation in Language for Competing in the Modern Era". In this event, of course, it is hoped that it can invite and motivate participants to increase creativity and innovation in language to be able to compete in the modern era.
UPBA UINSA exclusively invited three great people as speakers in this international webinar. The three people are Ahmad Firman Santriyo, Regional Coordinator of Polyglot Indonesia Chapter of Surabaya; David Friedrich, Language Teacher; and Zalfa Jatmiko, Djarum Scholarship and IISMA 2021 Awardee, and with a moderator namely Fatma Oryza, Delegation of Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program.
When the event took place, each speaker had delivered different materials. Like Mr. Firman Santriyo who explained about the importance of mastering various languages in this modern era and what the benefits would be. Not only that, he also explained how to become multilingual and how to increase fluency in multilingual speaking.
Mr. Firman Santriyo said, “Being able to speak many languages is important. When you can speak many languages, it can provide various advantages, one of which is to provide many opportunities to be able to work such as in international organizations, multinational companies, or even work abroad”.
Moreover, Mr. Firman Santriyo also added that there are several languages that are most in demand and needed, namely English, Chinese, Russian, French, Arabic and Spanish.
Different with the previous speakers, Ms. Zalfa Jatmiko in the second session delivered material about the secrets of getting a scholarship. As we know, scholarships are now a solution for students who want to pursue education both domestically and abroad who have economic constraints. However, getting a scholarship is not as easy as we think. To get a scholarship, a strategy is also needed.
“There are five strategies that can be used in applying for scholarships, namely (1) conduct a proper research, (2) Understand the scholarship qualifications, (3) Never prepare everything by yourself, (4) Expand your professional network, (5) Never depend on one plan” said Ms. Zalfa Jatmiko.
Furthermore, at the last session, Mr. David Friedrich also presented a discussion regarding the role of English in youth's achievement. In the International Webinar, Mr. David revealed that English is the primary language of 67 countries, which have 400 million native speakers and are the most widely written and spoken. Learning English can be done anywhere, such as on campus, organizations, schools, courses, or learning via the internet. If we can master English well, it is undeniable that there are many career opportunities that we can get.
